|Study: Exxon Mobil Source Of 5% Of All CO2 Emissions||Corporations, Globalization Energy Environment|
Exxon Mobil Corp. has historically been responsible for about 5 percent of the world's carbon emissions, a finding that could prod more shareholder resolutions on climate change, environmental groups said on Wednesday.
From 1882 to 2002, emissions of carbon dioxide from Exxon and its predecessor companies, through its operations and the burning of its products, totaled an estimated 20.3 billion metric tons, according to Washington, D.C.-based Friends of the Earth.
That represents 4.7 percent to 5.3 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions during that time, the group said in a report.
The 120-year period in question starts in 1882, the year Exxon Mobil's ultimate predecessor, the Standard Oil Trust, was formed.
Single-handedly responsible for 5% of the world's CO2 emissions over the past 120 years. Think maybe they have a vested interest in confusing the global warming issue?
It is the customers of ExxonMobil who are responsible for these emissions (you, me), not the company itself. If ExxonMobile were not providing the product, someone else would be. At least admit your own culpability and stop acting like a victim.

That really wasn't the point. The point was the enormous scale of ExxonMobil's historical contribution to fossil fuel extraction and, as a consequence, its enormous vested interest in maintaining the status quo. And when they do whatever they can to confuse the global warming issue, they're doing more than just making their product available. They are actively working to harm not just their customers, but everyone (human and nonhuman) on the planet.

Baloney. Of course ExxonMobil has a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. All businesses do. You do too. Are you living off the grid? No? Have a car? Then you're just as culpable as ExxonMobil. They're just giving you what you want. If you weren't here, ExxonMobil wouldn't have to drill for that oil and some GHG emissions would be saved. ExxonMobil is just giving the world what it wants. Get rid of demand, and their business will decline. Stop looking for scapegoats and try looking inward for a change.

None of which has anything to do with the subject of the post, which was ExxonMobil's campaign of lies and disinformation to confuse the global warming issue.
