| Dean Crushes Blitzer On Abramoff | Politics |
Oh, baby. Stop what you're doing and watch this video clip (via Atrios). Howard Dean leaves Wolf Blitzer sputtering.
I'll be back later with a transcript.
UPDATE: Ok, here's my transcript, but watch the video if you can to get the full effect.
BLITZER: Should Democrats who took money from Jack Abramoff, who's now pleaded guilty to bribery charges among other charges, a Republican lobbyist in Washington — should the Democrats who took money from him give that money to charity or give it back?DEAN: There are no Democrats who took money from Jack Abramoff. Not one. Not one single Democrat. Every person named in this scandal is a Republican, every person under investigation is a Republican, every person indicted is a Republican. This is a Republican finance scandal. There is no evidence that Jack Abramoff ever gave any Democrat any money, and we've looked through all those FEC reports to make sure that's true.
BLITZER: [Stammering] But through various Abramoff-related organizations, and outfits, a bunch of Democrats did take money that presumably originated with Jack Abramoff.
DEAN: That's not true either. There's no evidence for that either, there's no evidence...
BLITZER: What about Senator, what about, what about, what about Senator Byron Dorgan?
DEAN: Senator Byron Dorgan and some others took money from Indian tribes. They're not agents of Jack Abramoff. There's no evidence that I've seen that Jack Abramoff directed any contributions to Democrats. I know the Republican National Committee would like to get the Democrats involved in this. They're scared. They should be scared. They haven't told the truth, and they have misled the American people, and now it appears they're stealing from Indian tribes. The Democrats are not involved in this.
BLITZER: [Long pause, apparently getting direction in his earpiece] [Sigh] Unfortunately, we, uh, Mr. Chairman, we've got to leave it right there.
I love how Blitzer says that money donated by Indian tribes "presumably originated with Jack Abramoff," with absolutely no evidence or basis in fact. Objective journalism at its finest.

Priceless!
Posted by: adnohr at January 8, 2006 04:20 PM
I love at the end when Blitzer breaths a sigh of defeat and says "Unfortunately we have run out of time." I think what he really meant to say was "Unfortunately I just got my wimp ass handed to me on a platter." Wolf you are so lame, I wonder when America is going to come out of it's coma and say "Damn the repulsivecans are soooooo lame."
Posted by: Craig Struthers at January 8, 2006 04:21 PM
I can vouch for this article. I saw it happen in "real time" and it occurred exactly as described! Wolf was left stammering and stuttering when Dean forcefully but graciously denied Wolf's claims. The only response Wolf had was "we're out of time". Right wing slant, indeed!

CNN got Rid of Anything That Resembled A Journalist Years Ago.
If you recall, CNN was not going to run any reports from thier "Stand-UP Repoters" before the invasion of Iraq because people would have been questioning why we were going to invade if "no weapons of mass destruction" could be found. Blitzer is a total political hack whore and is safe with Time-Warner.

Posted by: waynor at January 8, 2006 04:55 PM
Wolf had what I call a "just drank a fear factor coctail" face. All the shills are adopting similar expressions lately, especially when they are asked to shill for postions supporting warrantless surveillance. Now with people loke Jack singing I'm sure we'll see more as we go.
Whether it was ignorance or if they (the corporate media types) really thought these GOP guys were clean; they have sure sucked up a lot of GOP kool aid. Looks like they are all about to vomit it now that they are exposed as accomplices, propagandists, or fools.
Posted by: at January 8, 2006 04:56 PM
I'm part Native American and it is offensive for Wolf to suggest because some tribes gave Democrats money, it was directed by Abramoff as if Native Americans take their cues from PIGS like Abramaoff! The suggestion Native Americans let someone, outside our tribes, like Abramoff direct us to give money to ANY candidate is RASCIST!

Blitzer is a turnoff. I've supported Dean since early on, and am glad that he's the DNC chair. I think he's probably the best one available to stand up to the media's practices of distorting & muting the message of the Dems (or anyone else who might have a message critical to the neocons), and I think we need to light a fire under the Dems to encourage them to follow through on the principled stand.
Every time the media goes into hysteria mode when Howard makes a statement (the truth is always "inflammatory", according to the meat-puppets on the TV screens & on the right-wing radio), while scum like Bill Bennett & Pat Robertson get all sorts of air time to embroider their lies and hate speech.
Do any of us here think that Howard would diagnose someone on the basis of a video, the way Senator Frist did?
Back on topic: Thank you, Howard, for stating this plain and true, and for not giving ground to that piss-ant, Blitzer!

CNN was my home page. It won't be any longer. WB is a robot and CNN has been force feeding the Republican party line for too long now. Howard Dean had the smarts and the guts to tell it like it is.

Way to go Howard Dean!

Uh, what if Dean is wrong? Do not misunderstand - I'm a huge Dean fan, a serious liberal. Sen. Brownback was telling George Stephanopolous just today that some 80 senators received moola from Abramhoff, and Dean says there were no Democrats. Who's wrong? Brownback, while a Repug, is not a big Bush supporter.
Posted by: Dilbert at January 8, 2006 07:41 PM
This is just a flash in the pan. Finally, Howard Dean decided to get a spine for one day and do the job he's paid to do for a change. Oh how I wish he could keep that spine. Sigh! Unfortunately, it's only temporary just like the flashes in the pan we've seen from the rest of his pathetic and dead party.
The thing that drives me up the wall about some progressives is that they celebrate little flashes in the pan like this. This is meaningless in the broad scheme of things. So many progressives come out with wishful thinking over and over again and each and every time what they tout in their wishful thinking doesn't happen and ends up dying on the vine. These progressives end up looking rather foolish over and over again.
Celebrate AFTER something MAJOR happens because if you celebrate BEFORE you'll end up looking like a damn fool.
If the dead Democratic Party had a spine (which they do not and will not have) they would have called for the IMPEACHMENT of the entire Bush Crime Family years ago. They would not have allowed the 2000 or 2004 elections to be stolen in the first place. Period. But instead, the Dead Democratic Party has been complicit in much of what Bush and the Republicans have wrought on this nation and the world. They are beyond contempt!
Some advice to the pro-war Democratic Party: GROW A SPINE and do the job you're paid to do for a change. Since 2000, you've essentially been on welfare, refusing to do the job you're paid to do. Call for the IMPEACHMENT of these scum of the earth people NOW. What the hell are you waiting for?
Posted by: mike at January 8, 2006 07:53 PM
>>>Celebrate AFTER something MAJOR happens because if you celebrate BEFORE you'll end up looking like a damn fool.<<<
I agree with the previous poster who said the above statement.
Boy, do I agree with that. A good example of that is "Merry Fristmass." Nothing came out of that. Nothing came out of the Downing Street Memo/Minutes. Nothing came out of the torture scandal. Nothing has come out of any of this crap. Some liberals are talking about how Bush will be impeached. What drugs are you on? Bush isn't going to be impeached. The Republicans are not about to call for impeachment nor are they about to give up their control...and the Dems sure as hell aren't going to call for impeachment. They're quite comfortable being in the minority. So as the previous poster said, celebrate when there's something worth celebrating *after* it happens.
Peace.

Dean has always had a backbone. Now he can't always go off and do what he wants because he serves at the discretion of the party as a whole.
I loved Wolf sigh of exaspiration at the very end. He was flummoxed. This is the best way of dealing with this... be straight forward and deny the assertions of the right.

Someone wrote this:
"Dean has always had a backbone. Now he can't always go off and do what he wants because he serves at the discretion of the party as a whole."
Dean has not always had a backbone. That's been one of my big problems with him. The dead Democratic Party needs a real strong LEADER badly to LEAD them as an OPPOSITION party. Since 2000, they have been and continue to be a go-along-to-get-along-with-the-Republicans party so really there's little difference between the two. We have a one party system with two heads.
For example, Alito is about to be confirmed. I don't know why they are bothering to go through the charade of a confirmation hearing for this man. He's a shoe-in. The dead Democratic Party is not even going to filibuster Alito because of weak leadership! Democrats will support this man because of weak leadership! If the tables were turned, do you think the Republicans would vote for the nominee? Hell no. He would be found dead along side the Potomac somewhere. And of course the Democrats wouldn't do anything about that either! (Remember Paul Wellstone?) Weak leadership, yet again.
Dean could "go off" as THE leader. It's hard to serve at the discretion of the party as a whole when the party as a whole doesn't know what the hell it stands for, if anything.

Blitzer has been a GOP cheerleader for years. That someone hadn't outed him on his program long ago tells of how wimpy are the Dems. I worked at CNN in its early days, and if I were still there, this Blitzer guy would be chopped meat. Jack Cafferty chews on him a bit, but he doesn't go far enough. Blitzer is a traitor, with more care for his beloved Israel than the USA. Let him prove otherwise, I dare him.
I've sent him e-mail challenges but they all go unanswered like the coward he is.
At least Howard Dean is out there, but he needs more backing from the wimps in the DNC, some of whom, no doubt, have some tainted secrets they are afraid will come out once Rove and his rangers check into their brown-shirt files.
A previous blogger is correct in here: the Dems should have jailed these bastards in 2000 for the stolen election, and Harris and JEB, and the Supreme Court traitors along with them.
Since these GOP butchers have been in office, more Americans have been killed (9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq) than any time since Viet Nam. These are the real terrorists on this planet, not just Al Quaida or "insurgents."
Somebody prove me wrong....please!!
Posted by: BrendanOMaidian at January 8, 2006 08:42 PM
This is how you fight these GOP right wingers. Forget about FOX news. Go after the conservative bias on CNN. Force CNN to make a choice, report the news accurately or have no viewership left.
Same with ABC, NBC, CBS.
Same with the New York Times and The Washington Post.
If these so called liberal papers are spewing conservative propaganda, then they legitimize conservatism which is indefensible on the merits.

AH, deusdiabolus, if you listen to Ed Schultz, he's been pointing out for at least a week that *no* Democrat has ever gotten money from Abramoff. That's ever, ever ever. Abramoff is a GOP tool, and would never dream of giving a Democrat any cash, even a fool like Lieberman (think he'll be named VP when Bush or Cheney need a replacement after the impeachments start?). This is a purely Republican scandal, thanks to how blood thirstily that crowd operates.

While I'm all for the calling out of any journalist when his/her bias gets thrown back in their face, we may be guilty of a little overzealousness in this case. The delays in Blitzer's responses were caused by satellite delay; the man was in Israel, don't forget, and his stammering was caused when he actually heard Dean speak, which is different from when WE heard Dean speak.
Listen, Blitzer's a jerk-off, no doubt. But the difference between us and them is when we throw a punch, there's substance behind it. Just a thought.

I agree with Lyleblog and bboop These scum sucking lowlife journalists who rake in millions using the public airwaves to knowingly deceive the public should be locked away in guantanamo for the of their worthless evil existence. They whored themselves out to the most corrupt ongoing criminal conspiracy America has had to endure-The Republican Party. They were the mouthpieces who told Bush's lies for him resulting in 2200 American soldiers deaths and the deaths of countless men, women, and children in a completely unwarranted war. Now this fuck with a reindeer name is trying to deflect the criticism toward these corrupt subhumans who siezed control of congress by falsely asserting that Democrats are also embroiled in this purely Republican criminal conspiracy. If it were up to me I'd paint a white cross on his flaccid ass an drop him in Falluja.

re: can someone explain this to me?
it's in the details (which are most ALWAYS overlooked by the RePugs and their thugs), Ineska.
and, if/when they actually do the diggin' necessary to shine the light on these guys (ie FEC reports illumination etc) it sounds like Dean will bear out as 'correct'. it figures that the RNC and RePugs and thugs would immdeiately take any/all tribal donations over the same period of time (regardless of what those donations where actually about and lump them together with the dirty money Abamoff was directing to individual RePugs either directly from his own pockets, his 'fake' charities/501c 3s & 4's, and/or his overly compliant tribal clients) it IS the way they ALWAYS obfuscate ANY issue, except for the 'Blame it on Bill(Clinton)' defense, which I expect to hear anytime now, too.
Remember the memo that got detailed of Scanlon's (Delay staffer turned Abramoff partner) where he laid out their stategy of obfuscation, how to 'play the game'?
Consider one memo highlighted in a Capitol Hill hearing Wednesday that Scanlon, a former aide to Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Tx., sent the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana to describe his strategy for protecting the tribe's gambling business. In plain terms, Scanlon confessed the source code of recent Republican electoral victories: target religious conservatives, distract everyone else, and then railroad through complex initiatives.
"The wackos get their information through the Christian right, Christian radio, mail, the internet and telephone trees," Scanlon wrote in the memo, which was read into the public record at a hearing of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. "Simply put, we want to bring out the wackos to vote against something and make sure the rest of the public lets the whole thing slip past them."
http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2005/11/03/abramoff/index_np.html
This obfuscation is the 'Green Bay Sweep' reversed (Maximum of deception and minimum of effort: For nearly a decade, the Green Bay Packers' Power Sweep was the dominant play in pro football. It was the signature play of Vince Lombardi's offensive scheme, and anyone who watched the NFL on CBS in the l960s heard sportscaster Ray Scott make calls, like the one above from the 1965 championship against Cleveland, numerous times.
The Lombardi Sweep was as much a part of the NFL landscape in the 1960s as a Jimmy Brown pitchout or a John Unitas sideline pass to Raymond Berry, and the Packers rode their number one running play to five NFL titles and victories in the first two Super Bowls.
Like most Lombardi plays, the sweep relied on a minimum of deception but a maximum of effort.
http://www.footballresearch.com/articles/frpage.cfm?topic=5-sweep
Establish the (BIG) lie, Get the talking points issued, and roll out the 'sweep' of ALL the Sunday talk shows, and Faux news et al...
remember, it's how the 'war' was sold? same shit, different day.
DEAN: Senator Byron Dorgan and some others took money from Indian tribes. They're not agents of Jack Abramoff. There's no evidence that I've seen that Jack Abramoff directed any contributions to Democrats.
DEAN: There is no evidence that Jack Abramoff ever gave any Democrat any money, and we've looked through all those FEC reports to make sure that's true.

I don't suppose we'll be seeing this tape being replayed on every network, every hour, for days on end, as we did with the so-called "Dean scream."
Ya think?

Howard Dean is a mensch-- Wolf Blitzer a zionist puppet. CNN part of the Propaganda Minstry.

I find Lou Dobbs to be in bed with Wolf Blitzer as well. Whenever something comes out in one of his interviews, as a negative to this administration, Lou always ends the interview with; I believe the democrats are guilty as well, or Clinton did something similar.
Dobbs is another GOP talking head!

They won't let Dr. Dean be President because he does not go to church often enough to please the American public. I guess church is where they teach you to steal, cheat and to feel good about your country slaughtering people in your name.
Posted by: Gern Blanston at January 9, 2006 07:07 AM
Howard Dean is a plain speaking, straight forward Democrat who upsets some of the wimpy, ass kissing Dems such as Joe Biden. Dean could appeal to the blue collar, working class, joe six packs who have been fooled by the Republican liars and their corporate media shills such as Blitzer. Dean could win in 2008 with a message of universal health care, increasing the minimum wage to a living wage, increasing taxes on the wealthy and corporate welfare reform.

DEAN P-OWNED WOLFY!

it seems to me imperative always to remember, early in his career, blitzer was pat robertson's monkey
Posted by: w campbell at January 9, 2006 07:48 AM
It's interesting how Blitz has mastered the Art of the Dishonest Question. To any detractors to this statement I have some simple questions: “Did you stop beating your wife?” and “You don’t steal anymore do you?”.

HOWARD DEAN FOR PRESIDENT!!! WE NEED A DEMOCRATIC LEADER WITH THE COURAGE TO SPEAK UP AND OUT LIKE HOWARD DOES. GOD BLESS HIM. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Go get 'em Howard. Make your (and ours) bite even worse than our bark. Contrast the impeachment of Clinton for having some sex with someone who may have been assigned that task by
parties unknown with the lies and complete disregard for the people of this country and of the world: Bush.

Yea!It was great to see dean assertively tell it like it is.Blitzer sure sputtered alright.Dean was ready and right in saying the Republicans would like to drag the democrats in because they are scared. Of course they are !We need more toughness coming from the dems . Realistically, a lot rides on this years election...like our democracy. We also need to be assrtive and vocal on issues and the voting irregularities that stole two elections. Mary Basombrio

Greetings,
Blitzer refuses to acknowledge reports in the following site re WMD, preemptive war and treason in wartime.
No surprise, eh? No one at CNN will respond to this information. Ditto for the rest of the mainstream media.
Thank God for the Internet!

one thing is VERY clear from watching the video: blitzer's stammering has nothing to do with, ahem, "satellite delay" - it's obvous that cnn was trying to come up with questions for him to ask as a result of dean's responses - which, i would point out, came IMMEDIATELY after each of blitzer's questions with NO satellite delay...

Re Dean and the Dems, I'd like to get BuzzFlash contributors' response to this ide:
The Green Party of America should invite Dean to bolt the almost defunct Democratic Party and take all those who agree with him along. This will always be a two-party system, so the difference between the two has to be meaningful. It's time to bury the Democratic Party and put a properly funded and organized Green Party in its place.
Posted by: Deena Stryker at January 9, 2006 12:58 PM
Dean tells it like it is, he did in 2004, and he still does today...that's why I supported him in 2004..and I'd do it again without a moments hesitation..Give'em hell, Doc!
Posted by: staggerlee at January 9, 2006 01:00 PM
I can't tell you how refreshing it is to finally hear and see a Democrat with a backbone who will respond with truth to the pervasive lies of the Repukes and their shills. Maybe Dean's courageous stand will light a fire under other Dems, who should be jumping up and down right now, using the ample ammunition provided by the Repukes,to shoot down all the lying scumbags that have taken over our government and "free" press.

Congrats should also go out to Luis and the entire DNC communications staff (no, I don't work for them but I know Luis) who did a fantastic job preparing HoDo for the interview.
That said, the fact should be pretty clear to most journalists (those not lazily going off the cuff from GOP talking points, that is,) that Abramoff was a very partisan guy, whose firm may have spread some money around, but who himself never gave a dime to Democrats. ThinkProgress, the Hotline and other outfits, and I think even the WaPo, hit that point last week. How was Wolf not in the know?
http://blog.reidreport.com/2006/01/dirty-five-dozen.html
A bunch of the links are in there, and I'm sure there's plenty more if you go directly to thinkprogress.org...
Posted by: ReidBlog at January 9, 2006 02:02 PM
Also, would it be totally out of line and un-P.C. to point out that one of Abramoff's pet causes, and one to which he diverted lots of the ill-gotten cash he raked from the Indian tribes -- was the Jewish settler movement on the West Bank and in Gaza. Abramoff ciphoned off funds supposedly bound for a youth charity he started in D.C. and instead sent the money to buy guns and ammo for right wing settlers to "fight the intifada" -- among other right wing/Likudnik causes. Wolf Blitzer would be sympathetic to him, you'd think, having formerly been the P.R. flak for the AIPAC lobby...
I know you're not supposed to talk askance about Israel, but dems the facts...

My husband and I agree with all we read here. We wish the Dems could UNITE and get STRONG, because we believe it's the best party for America.
Another thing that really bothers us is the fact that our soldiers are losing their lives, and billions of dollars being spent to supposely help Iraq, why Iraq isn't repaying us with free oil in return????????????
Posted by: Judi at January 9, 2006 02:10 PM
Same old story. Wolf, like most of the others, do their best to promote Administration untruths and misinformation. GO HOWARD!!!

Wonderful! It's so good to see an asskisser like "wolf"(should be puppydog) squirm when confronting someone like Dean in a verbal exchange. Just imagine what'd be like if it was Dean in the presidental debates with bush instead if Kerrey. Kerry had the scumbag on the ropes, felt sorry for him, and backed off. Not Dean! He would've demolished bush and showed the world what a shallow, strutting popinjay, the "prezdint" really is,little voice in his (bush's) ear, notwithstanding.

However, I did include the URL podcast for something else I stumbled upon. www.therudeguy.com If you like Dean's balls wait till you hear The Rude Guy.

MacBean, I think you meant to say "cOjones" not "cAjones", unless you believe Howard Dean is a chest of drawers. Cajones are drawers, cojones are balls--one vowel makes a big difference and can make you sound stupid if you are going to use a language you don't really know.

Blitzer has been evidencing symptoms of Gulf War Syndrome ever since late '91. Exposure to not-so-depleted Uranium ordinance is finally taking its stammering toll.
"BLITZER: What about Senator, what about, what about, what about..."
In journalism school, Wolf's speech tutor was Mel Blanc. "Bdeeyah, bdeeyah, bdeeyah, bdeeyah, that's all, Folks!"
I hope Howard did his homework. Blitzer obviously didn't.

Patrick Kennedy who I believe is in the House and a Kennedy family member was asked if he was going to return the $45,000 in donations he had received from an Indian tribe. He responded that he wasn't going to do that because he was a strong advocate of Indian rights and he accepted the contribution like he has thousands of others.

Howard Dean for president! More of us should speak out against the corrupt party in power now!
Posted by: at January 11, 2006 11:10 AM
Way back in early 2000 I told my friends Howard Dean was the man for 2000. He had exactly what this country needed. Knowledge, courage, and common sense. Kerry was good, but just too nice. Howard would have put up a terrific fight, and, like Harry Truman, would have given them hell. (Harry said he gave them the truth and they thought it was hell) Dean would have given them the truth. But mostpeople do not want truth; it would destroy their smug "comfort zone of ignorance."
Posted by: Ruth Klyne at January 11, 2006 02:12 PM
Nice job Howard. Too bad he didn't get the nomination. The repug run media knew Dean posed a viable threat, that's the reason they took his rally speech and repeatedly showed it . Someone who is too lazy to examine issues is quick to grab a propaganda sound bite tossed out by the lap dog media and use it as an excuse to do something real stupid like vote for bush.

cowboyneok is right. To equate Abramoff's money with tribal contributions is clueless and racist.
The tribes are organizing politically and will be showing great strength in upcoming races. See the new INDN List at http://www.indnslist.org/

I missed that airing but I'm so happy to see Wolf Blitzer, that simpering right wing schill gawking and gasping with his political pants down around his ankles and looking as stupid as many know him to be.
Posted by: Madison Mason at January 14, 2006 04:53 PM
I hate to break up your socialist love fest, but who are you guys kidding. Howard Dean is laughable - have your forgotten that several Democratic senators have already returned Abramoff money? Yes it is a scandal, but to believe that only Republicans are involved is simply delusional - look at the facts. I know that facts are a liberal's worst fear, but try to be brave.
In other news, Howard Dean is a traitor plain and simple - to say that we cannot win this war only emboldens our enemies. The fact that you guys actually believe that CNN, ABC, and NBC are spouting right wing propoganda only confirms to me the depth of your pathology. I take great comfort knowing that the Democratic party is slave to the likes of you - it confirms to me that the conservative movement is gaining momentum.
Fear not, though. There are a few countries left in the world that espouse your beliefs - I hear that China and Cuba would love to have you on board.
Posted by: VoiceOfReason at January 26, 2006 06:07 PM
Ah, yes, VoiceOfReason. Facts.
Fact: Abramoff gave no money to Democrats. Zero. Period. As Dean said.
Fact: As for Abramoff's clients, see this: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/1/27/175623/133
All of which is a no-brainer: the very last thing Jack Abramoff wanted to do was enrich Democrats. Duh.
Posted by: Jonathan at January 27, 2006 08:23 PM
Yes - Abramoff did not give his own money to any Democrats - that is true. The groups Abramoff was representing, however, are another story. Just take a look at Harry Reid - he received $66,000 from Abramoff interests between 2001 and 2004. Reid is not alone. Even Howard Dean now realizes that is a problem. The investigation will likely implicate members of both parties - corruption is not a problem limited to Republicans. I believe that anyone implicated in this scandal should be jailed regardless of their party affiliation.
